PM Imran Khan says the government is fighting false news, not independent media.

  • Fake news, according to Prime Minister Imran Khan, is "degrading for the nation."
  • According to the report, "70 per cent of news programmes" broadcast anti-government material.
  • Encourages young people to advocate Pakistan's vision for the future.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan stated on Friday that his administration is not opposed to free media and that the only issue it has is with "false news and propaganda," adding that the current regime has granted news organisations "greater freedom than before."

As he spoke at the opening ceremony for the Digital Media Development Program, the prime minister said that "fake news" was "degrading" to the nation.

The prime minister encouraged the young to support Pakistan's vision for the future.

He observed that when a person speaks the truth, their social standing increases, while no one appreciates a person who tells the truth. "The same is true in the field of journalism. They may take advantage of the situation by spreading false information, but this will eventually be exposed as false."

What counts, he said further, is credibility. He went on to say that the PTI-led administration desires that the media report the facts accurately.

"My administration has no fear of the media or the court," he stated, adding that those engaged in corruption do have a fear of them, but his government does not have any.

"I promise you that 70 per cent of the programmes are directed against us," he claimed. "You can look at the data," he said.

"I can assure you that the kind of defamation that was perpetrated against the prime minister and his cabinet members would not be tolerated in any other democratic society," he said.

When the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir was recently elected, three major newspapers published headlines claiming that he was selected for the post using pseudoscientific techniques such as numerology. Prime Minister Imran Khan responded by saying that he was not chosen in this manner.

"What could possibly be more egregious defamation than this? That the prime minister of AJK was chosen by the incumbent prime minister based on numerological calculations. I can assure you that if anything like this had been published in England, I would have received millions of pounds in damages and Shaukat Khanum would have reaped the benefits of it."

Asked whether his government was utilising state media to its benefit, the prime minister said that it was not, unlike the previous administration, which "would utilise it to deflect attention away from their corruption."

'Never underestimate your own abilities.'

PM Imran Khan encouraged young people to "never underestimate their own abilities" and to "always aspire to achieve great things."

The prime minister said that as a result of the use of information and technology, new possibilities were being created for the young. "However, to do this, you must maintain an open mind and establish a goal."

Using his cricket career as an example, the prime said that he had surpassed more gifted players than himself because he remained constant and continued to set objectives for himself, and he encouraged the young to do the same.

According to the prime minister, "some individuals pass their examinations because they are brilliant, but pupils who keep working hard will be able to go ahead of them in the future."

In a statement outlining his goals, the premier said that he wished for the youthful generation to promote Pakistan's "unique" vision of the future. According to the premier, the goal is to create a nation that is self-sufficient in all aspects of life.

According to the prime minister, "And we are moving towards achieving it [...] before, we would have bowed down before the global superpowers." "[However,] we are on our way to transforming Pakistan into a welfare state in the manner of Riyasat-e-Madina."

The premier said that Pakistan had taken a step that even "developed nations" had failed to do by giving health cards to every household in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which entitles them to Rs1 million in medical coverage.

"This is a step towards Riyasat-e-Madina," he said, adding that the administration is attempting to elevate the impoverished sector of society in accordance with the country's goal for the future of the country.

According to him, "even America does not have this kind of insurance."

He also said that the government is constructing shelter houses and giving loans to those who want to build their own homes, which is in accordance with the ideals of a welfare state, as well as providing assistance to those who are in need.

The government's "flagship initiative" is described as follows:

As stated in a tweet by the Digital Media Wing Pakistan, the Digital Media Development Programme is a flagship programme that is in accordance with the prime minister's agenda.
