According to Forbes, Manchester United striker, Cristiano Ronaldo has regained the top place from Lionel Messi on the list of the world's highest-paid football players. Ronaldo previously held the position.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, 36, returned to Manchester United from Juventus in August after a 12-year absence, while Lionel Messi has left his home club Barcelona to join Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Forbes, Ronaldo, one of the world's most popular athletes with more than 500 million followers across social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, is expected to earn $125 million before taxes in the 2021-22 season, with $70 million coming from his salary and bonuses at Manchester United.
The remainder of his earnings will come from sponsorships and collaborations with companies like Nike, Herbalife, Clear, and his own CR7 label.
Messi, who was ranked first on the list last year, would get a salary of $75 million, with an extra $35 million in sponsorships, for total anticipated earnings of $110 million.
The Argentine's striking partner at Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar, who in May extended his contract with the club until 2025, comes in third place on the list with total earnings of $95 million.
Another Paris Saint-Germain player, Kylian Mbappe ($43 million), is ranked fourth on the Forbes list, with Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah ($41 million) completing the top five.
