Wikipedia: About

To assist build a world in which everyone may freely participate in the total of all knowledge, Wikipedia is an online free-content encyclopaedia project. A paradigm of freely modifiable material has been established, with assistance from the Wikimedia Foundation. Its name is a mashup of the terms wiki (a technique for building collaborative websites derived from the Hawaiian word wiki, which means "fast") and encyclopaedia (which is derived from the word encyclopaedia, which means "complete collection of information"). The articles on Wikipedia include links that are intended to direct the reader to related sites that provide more information on the topic.

A joint effort by a huge number of anonymous contributors, Wikipedia is written in the form of a collaborative effort. The editing of Wikipedia articles is open to anybody with an Internet connection, except a few instances when editing is prohibited to avoid additional disruption or vandalism.

With over 1.8 billion unique device visits each month as of August 2021, Wikipedia has evolved from its inception on January 15, 2001, to become the world's biggest reference website. It has more than 57 million articles in more than 300 languages, including 6,394,472 articles in English, with 126,506 contributors in the last month.

The five pillars of Wikipedia represent the basic concepts that guide its operation. However, it is not necessary to be acquainted with the rules and standards that have been established by the Wikipedia community to enhance the encyclopaedia before contributing.

This page may be edited by anybody who wishes to contribute or modify the text, references, pictures, and other material. More important than who makes a contribution is what is made available. The content must be free of copyright limitations and controversial material about live persons for it to be retained. Its content must adhere to Wikipedia's standards, which include being verified against a publicly available, reputable source of information. Unreviewed research, as well as editorial views and beliefs, will be deleted. Due to the ease with which errors may be corrected by the software and the fact that many skilled editors are on hand to verify that changes are improvements, contributions to Wikipedia cannot be detrimental to the site's reputation. Simply click on the Edit button at the top of any editable page to get started.

When compared to paper-based reference materials, Wikipedia is a living collaboration that differs in some critical ways. Articles about fresh occurrences emerge within minutes, rather than months or years, since the site is constantly being produced and updated. Wikipedia has grown to be more thorough than any other encyclopaedia since anybody may contribute to its improvement. Its contributors strive to improve the quality of the content as well as to remove or correct misinformation and other mistakes. Generally speaking, papers grow more thorough and well-balanced as they go through time. As a result, since anybody may edit any article at any moment and add new material, any article may include unnoticed disinformation, mistakes, or vandalism that would otherwise go undiscovered. It is only when readers are aware of this that they may get accurate information, avoid newly added disinformation (see Wikipedia: Researching using Wikipedia), and help to improve the page.
